Principles and Elements of Design

Lesson Goal: 

The main goal of this project was to get a better understanding of the 12 elements and principles of design. We were assigned to take pictures that represent each of the 12 topics given and create a definition that is appropriate for a specific age group. Each group then had to present to the rest of the class.

Extension Activity: 

I would have one group of students swap pictures with another group and have them label the pictures. Each group would get a sticky note with each of the 12 principles and elements of design and have them match the picture to the topic. When everyone is done, they would switch their pictures back and they would "grade" how the other group did.

 Basket Weaving Lesson: For this lesson we listened to a quick lecture on basket weaving then practiced weaving with 3 strips of paper. From there were took a paper cup and cut an odd number of tabs down to the bottom. Next, we gently pushed the cup down to make it easier to weave. Then, we taped one end of the string to the inside of the cup, and went over and under with the string half way up the cup. Finally we cut the top off and hot glued ribbon on the top, then glued a pipe cleaner as the handle. We also had to write 2 paragraphs on a prompt about basket weaving and why we chose the design for our basket. Extension Activity: For an extension activity, I would have my students write about how they would use this technique if they were in Ancient Egypt. Would they use the basket weaving technique for a gift, to carry goods, for a baby cradle, etc.? I would have them write a minimum of one paragraph, of 3-5 sentences explaining what they would create and why they chose that item...

Dotting

 Dotting Lesson: For this lesson, we worked with paint using the dotting technique. We talked about warm and cool colors and different ways we can use dotting in our artwork. We were to sketch out the animal cutout we picked and plan how we wanted to dot around it. From there we followed step-by-step instructions on how to cut a brown bag so it was flat and we could paint on it. Finally, we glued down our animal and could begin dotting around it with paint. My goal for the dotting was to create a gradient effect. Extension Activity: For an extension activity, I would have my students focusing on a specific part of the world. For the lesson, they focused on Australia, so I could use the same area. We would talk about the food, animals, people, environments etc. While we were talking about the environment, I would use this art project and have the students create the environment that their animal lives in. Hidden Safari

 Hidden Safari: For this lesson we were to create an animal that was "hidden." To begin, we used a technique were we drew a picture upside down from an example picture. We had to practice on a few examples and from there we could pick out our animal. Then, we drew our animal, using the upside down technique, but on a bigger piece of paper. Once we had that copied down with a blue colored pencil, we were shown how we hide our animal using warm colors. We had to have at least 3 layers over our animal so we couldn't see it. Then, we created red glasses that we could put on to see our animal, these glasses allowed us to see the animal and not the layers of warm colors. These are the glasses we made so we could see the picture behind the layers. The monkey is very faint but I wanted to make sure it was hidden behind the layers.
