Starry Night

Image
Lesson: For this lesson, we talked about Vincent Van Gogh's life and his artwork. We then had to create our own version of his piece, Starry Night. We began with laying down tissue paper for the background to create a landscape and used modge podge to keep it down. Then, we added a silhouette to add more detail to our landscape. Lastly, we used oil pastels (could use crayons too) to make lines that showed movement in out landscapes. Extension Activity: I would incorporate language arts by having the students write a story about their landscape. It can be based on a true story or completely made up. I wouldn't have them make it a very long story because I want them to share their stories and artwork with the class without taking too much time.

The Dot

Lesson: We listened to the book, The Dot , by Peter Reynolds and had to create our own dot. We were given a coffee filter and we required to use a minimum of 3 different mediums on the coffee filter to create our dot (oil pastels, crayons, markers, water color paint, etc.). Then, we brushed water over the different mediums to uncover our designs and see what ones blended or resisted. Extension Activity: I would have my students display their artwork around the room. Then, I would give each student a sheet with everyone's name on it. The class will then walk around looking at their peer's artwork and try to figure out what mediums were used on the dot. This will help their understanding of the different materials.
