Scratching

 Scratching Lesson:

For this lesson, we had to create a lizard using scratch art. We began by using oil pastels to color the rainbow on a piece of paper. Then we taped the sides of the paper and used a black mixture to paint over the rainbow. While that was drying, we went over a PowerPoint about different artists who use scratching to create art. We then had to draw our own chameleons and trace them onto a pre-made scratching paper. Once our black mixture was dry, we traced the chameleon on the black mixture. From there we use the wood tool to scratch out our chameleon.

Extension Activity:

As an extension activity, I would pair this lesson with science. We could talk about different habitats that animals live in. With a main focus on the habitat that a chameleon lives in. We would talk about other animals that live in the same habitat, plants found in that habitat, and what kind of food can grow in the same habitat. We could also look to see if humans could survive in the same habitat as the chameleon.

 Print Making Lesson: For this activity we had to create a pattern on a piece of paper using 3 different designs. We then transferred that design onto a square piece of Styrofoam to make indents. Next, we colored a square piece of paper with either the 3 warm colors or 3 cool colors. Then, we put a thin layer of pain over the design, but had to be careful not to fill the indents. We put the Styrofoam square, paint side down, onto the paper we colored. We had to pick one corner to be the center and rotate it to create a pattern. Extension Activity: The students could write a story about the design they created. Once they have finished their design, they could see what their design makes them feel. They could write a fictional story about what they see in the design or a personal story about the way the design makes them feel.

Dotting

 Dotting Lesson: For this lesson, we worked with paint using the dotting technique. We talked about warm and cool colors and different ways we can use dotting in our artwork. We were to sketch out the animal cutout we picked and plan how we wanted to dot around it. From there we followed step-by-step instructions on how to cut a brown bag so it was flat and we could paint on it. Finally, we glued down our animal and could begin dotting around it with paint. My goal for the dotting was to create a gradient effect. Extension Activity: For an extension activity, I would have my students focusing on a specific part of the world. For the lesson, they focused on Australia, so I could use the same area. We would talk about the food, animals, people, environments etc. While we were talking about the environment, I would use this art project and have the students create the environment that their animal lives in.
