Clay

Clay Monsters Lesson: For this lesson we were to create a monster out of clay. We had to sketch out our idea before we created it so we knew what we wanted to do without wasting a bunch of clay or having it dry out. Then, we had to add and subtract something from our base. I added eyes and teeth, and subtracted a scratch on the monsters face. We then had to name our monster and write one sentence about why we gave our monster that name.  Extension Activity: I could have the students do an art gallery walk. I would split the students up into different groups and each group would have a chance to showcase their artwork and talk about it. They would have their own station in the classroom and their peers would be able to walk around and ask them questions about their artwork.

3D Design

Traditional African Masks Lesson: For this lesson, we did a PowerPoint presentation on traditional African masks. We talked about symmetry, geometrical shapes, and patterns. Everyone had to create a 3D mask that had multiple 3D elements on it and a unique design. They also had to fill out a notecard with 2 facts about traditional African masks, their name, and name their mask. Extension Activity: An extension activity would be to have the students write a story about their mask. Once they have created their animal, human, or spirit mask they can tell us more about the background of their mask. They could also write about when they would wear their mask and what they would use it for.

Crafts

Basket Weaving Lesson: For this lesson we listened to a quick lecture on basket weaving then practiced weaving with 3 strips of paper. From there were took a paper cup and cut an odd number of tabs down to the bottom. Next, we gently pushed the cup down to make it easier to weave. Then, we taped one end of the string to the inside of the cup, and went over and under with the string half way up the cup. Finally we cut the top off and hot glued ribbon on the top, then glued a pipe cleaner as the handle. We also had to write 2 paragraphs on a prompt about basket weaving and why we chose the design for our basket. Extension Activity: For an extension activity, I would have my students write about how they would use this technique if they were in Ancient Egypt. Would they use the basket weaving technique for a gift, to carry goods, for a baby cradle, etc.? I would have them write a minimum of one paragraph, of 3-5 sentences explaining what they would create and why they chose that item...

Print Making

Print Making Lesson: For this activity we had to create a pattern on a piece of paper using 3 different designs. We then transferred that design onto a square piece of Styrofoam to make indents. Next, we colored a square piece of paper with either the 3 warm colors or 3 cool colors. Then, we put a thin layer of pain over the design, but had to be careful not to fill the indents. We put the Styrofoam square, paint side down, onto the paper we colored. We had to pick one corner to be the center and rotate it to create a pattern. Extension Activity: The students could write a story about the design they created. Once they have finished their design, they could see what their design makes them feel. They could write a fictional story about what they see in the design or a personal story about the way the design makes them feel.

2D Paper

2D Paper: Drip Technique For this lesson, we had to cut out 3 geometric shapes and trace them onto construction paper. From there, we were given 3 piles of shaving cream that consisted of the 3 primary colors (which were given to us as food coloring). We had to take popsicle sticks to marble the colors and then placed our cut out shapes on them. Then, we scraped off the shaving cream with card and were left with the food coloring on our shape leaving a cool design. We glued the shapes where they were traced on the paper. We also had to write our name, title our artwork, and write a sentence on why we chose that unique design. Extension Activity: As an extension activity, I would have the students walk around and look at their peer's artwork. I would split them up into groups and have 1 group walk around while the other students present their artwork. It would be like an art show for the student's and can help them with their communication skills and their ability to express th...

Painting Lesson

Painting Lesson: Wassily Kandinsky Lesson:  Students had to complete a pre-assessment on geometric and organic shapes as well as patterns. The teachers explained the story you would normally read to the students about Wassily Kandinsky. We then had to draw 3 geometric and 3 organic shapes on a piece of white paper, then we had to draw a line dividing the paper. On 2 of the sections, we had to draw a pattern. Then, we listened to music and had to pick a water color that felt like the song for each section. Extension Activity: Have the students write down what song goes with at least 3 of the colors. This way they can explain why they felt that specific color feels like a certain song. I would have them write down sentences that would explain their feelings then have them share with a partner. I would also ask if anyone would like to share with the entire class.
